We enjoy the company of like minded people, who share our interest in photonics and related subjects.  It is an informal way to meet other professionals and exchange experiences.  We meet so we can talk about science and engineering. And, to stimulate exchange, we have a volunteer presenting each meeting.

The chapter has gone through some changes:

Moncef has accepted an offer from Rutgers, one of the best technical universities, where he will make a great difference, as he has here. We are sorry to see him leave, but wish him the very best.

We welcome on board Janet Langford Gray, who has volunteered to help with Marketing, PR and other related projects.  Janet has many years experience in marketing and PR in the high tech field, and we enjoy her enthusiasm, and appreciate her willingness to do hands on work. Go visit the newly revived website: www.renotahoephotonics.com and see for yourself.

The Fall Program:

Oct, 23rd, 2008:      Zbigniew Radzimski, PhD, MEMS and its Applications

Nov, 20th 2008:     Dave Archer, Nevada Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology

Dec, 18th 2008 :     Christmas Party

Our Thursday, October 23rd, 2008, 5:00 PM, presenter; ZbigniewRadzimski, PhD.

Presentation: MEMS market: Medical and Optical Applications

Bio: Dr. Zbigniew Radzimski graduated from the Technical University of Wroclaw, Department of Electronics in Poland in 1973 and received a Ph.D. from the same department in 1976. During his employment at Institute of the Electron Technology of the Technical University he was conducting research in the application of electron and ion beams for material processing and characterization. In 1996 he joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at North Carolina State University where he was engaged in various projects related to structural, chemical and electrical characterization of semiconductor materials. The majority of the work was concentrated on defect control and engineering in silicon. He joined SEH America in 1997 where as the Director of the Customer Interface Group his primary focus was on product development and technical/sales support of US customers. In December 2004 Dr. Radzimski joined Silicon Quest International as Executive VP for Technology and Product Development. In 2007 he became the president of Silicon Quest.

Abstract: Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are micron-sized structures such as beams, cantilevers, diaphragms, valves, plates, and switches that can function as tiny sensors and actuators. They are fabricated by integrated circuit (IC) manufacturing processes; that is, by bulk and surface micromachining. Like ICs, thousands of micro-machines can be fabricated on a single wafer with supporting circuits integrated on the chip. They can be mass-produced in the millions at low prices, which is their main appeal. The presentation will review major technological steps that are involved in fabricating such structures using various device examples that are currently built for medical and optical applications. A short overview of Silicon Quest capabilities in this field will be also presented.

We missed you at our last great meeting!  Pat Arnott presented on "Aerosol Measurements: Optical Instruments and Applications" and Larry amused us with table games.

Due to technical difficulties,…we had to be inventive,… we were able for the show to go on by utilizing our vast entrepreneurial collective gray matter.  E la pizza era incredible!

Sonny's Authentic Italian Pizza & Pasta website  Look at the websites pizza menu so you know what pizza you want beforehand.  We will order larges which feed 2.5 people.
